Throughout his career Peter has provided legal education to law students, lawyers, and judges. Peter taught the bar admission course for seven years and contributed to many CBA and LESA education seminars. From 1992 to 2000 he was a faculty member of the national criminal law program and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Calgary law school and the school of social work. Since 2000 he has delivered more than 50 presentations for the National Judicial Institute, the institution responsible for judicial education and training in Canada.

Peter has also served the legal profession as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta from 1988-1996, and was elected President of the Law Society in 1995.

Recognizing the challenges of our adversarial litigation system, particularly in family law conflicts involving children, Peter became a leading advocate for judicial mediation, encouraging recourse to Judicial Dispute Resolution (JDR), and Appeal Conferences as more effective alternatives to settle disputes.

During his 26 years on the Bench Peter resolved numerous matters by way of JDR, including wrongful dismissals, personal injury claims, contract disputes, and estate disputes.

While a lawyer in private practice he was retained by the Saskatchewan Government to conduct a review of Saskatchewan’s Prosecution Service. More recently, in 2024, he was retained by Alberta Justice to conduct a review of the Alberta Serious Response Team (ASIRT).

Beyond his legal career, Peter maintains a deep appreciation for nature and balance in life, raising cattle and enjoying the tranquility of his property southwest of Calgary.
